On May 15, 1929, a fire began in the outpatient clinic building of the famed Cleveland Clinic, where nitrocellulose x-ray film was stored in the basement. When exposed to heat from a 100-watt light bulb and a leaking steam pipe, the film released smoke and poisonous gases, which caused an explosion. The deadly yellow and brown vapor that rose through the building killed 80 visitors and patients and 43 employees, while injuring 92 others. Among the victims and survivors were residents of Lake and Geauga counties, and we’ll share their stories. It remains the worst hospital disaster in U.S. history, making headlines across the globe and leading to new safety regulations nationwide. To register click above or call 440-944-6010.
